Protecting the Beauty and Longevity of Fine Craftsmanship

Custom woodwork—whether it’s cabinetry, trim, built-ins, or millwork—is more than just functional; it’s an investment in the character and value of your home. At Records Custom Cabinets and Trim Carpentry, we take pride in building heirloom-quality woodwork for Wichita homeowners. But like all fine materials, custom wood needs proper care to maintain its beauty over time.

Fortunately, with the right habits and a little knowledge, keeping your woodwork looking its best is simple and rewarding.

Daily & Weekly Maintenance

Start by dusting regularly using a soft microfiber cloth. Dust may seem harmless, but over time it can build up and dull the surface of your wood. Avoid feather dusters or rough cloths that can leave behind scratches or lint. For areas like trim and molding, a vacuum with a soft brush attachment works well for getting into corners and grooves.

For general cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth followed by a dry wipe. Avoid using excess water or soaking the wood—moisture can cause warping or swelling, especially around joints or seams. Mild soap (such as dish soap diluted in warm water) is safe for most finishes. Just be sure to dry the surface immediately afterward.

What to Avoid

One of the biggest mistakes people make is using harsh chemical cleaners. Products that contain ammonia, bleach, or strong solvents can break down finishes and leave the wood exposed and vulnerable. Even all-purpose cleaners that aren’t designed for wood can strip away protective coatings over time.

Polishes and waxes should also be used sparingly and only if recommended for your specific finish. Too much wax buildup can attract dust and create a sticky residue that dulls the surface. If in doubt, contact us—we’re happy to tell you exactly what works best for the products we’ve built.

Sunlight and Temperature Considerations

Wood is a natural material, and like all organic products, it responds to its environment. Direct sunlight can cause fading and discoloration, especially on stained wood. Try to position furniture and cabinetry out of constant UV exposure, or consider using blinds or window films to filter sunlight.

Humidity and temperature changes can also affect your woodwork. In Kansas, where we experience all four seasons, it’s a good idea to keep indoor humidity levels between 35% and 50% to minimize seasonal expansion and contraction. A whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier can make a big difference in protecting your investment.

Caring for Touch-Ups and Minor Damage

Even the best finishes may eventually get nicked or scratched, especially in high-traffic areas. For small scuffs or scratches, a wood-tone marker or blending pencil can provide a quick and effective fix. Deeper damage may require a light sanding and refinishing—but the good news is, solid wood can be renewed more easily than synthetic materials.

If your piece has a clear finish, such as lacquer or polyurethane, we recommend periodic inspections. If you start to see dulling, peeling, or loss of water resistance, it may be time for professional maintenance. Letting the finish degrade too far can make refinishing more involved—and more expensive.

Keep It Clean, Keep It Dry, Keep It Protected

That’s really the golden rule. Woodwork that’s free from dust and moisture, protected from extreme environmental changes, and cleaned with the proper products will continue to look beautiful for decades to come.

At Records Custom Cabinets and Trim Carpentry, we don’t just build for today—we build for a lifetime. And with a little care, your custom woodwork will stay as timeless and impressive as the day it was installed.
